An immigrant praises the strength of America

It comes by surprise. Bombs explode and people run; some are killed, hundreds are injured. Why? What is in the mind of men to do such things?

Every time America is hurt, I hear her screaming. Every time America is injured, I hear her crying.

She is a beautiful democracy with plentiful feelings of hope, love and gratitude. Maybe because I am an immigrant, I feel respectful for what she has given to me: my husband, who is a wonderful human being, kids who work hard and succeed, as well as marvelous grandchildren.

I am not young anymore and I would like to leave you a picture of faith for our country. Perhaps you were born here; I was not. I want you to know that there are more good people in the United States of America than bad.

I want you to believe that justice prevails. I want you to understand that whatever America has to go through, her destiny is to bring peace, a safety net for the world, and courage as well as healing.

She is a young child still and needs to be nurtured. She is powerful and graceful. She brings wonders and marvels to the world.

Her people are courageous and she gives them plenty of opportunities to envision, create, explore. She is the imagination, the desire to succeed, and the land of helping hands.

She is full of compassion. America, the beautiful, house of liberty, stands for her people. Her home of laws gratifies the rich and the poor.

Why am I so in love with my adopted land? I grew up in France, not far away from people who had no rights. Here I feel free. I don’t have five weeks of vacation per year, but the time I spend working is rewarding.

First Boston, then a letter poisoned with ricin addressed to our president, Mr. Obama, the same week; these current events are not going to defeat us.

We will prove to the world that we can fight in harmony the people who want to hurt our beautiful land. God bless the United States of America.
