More than 100 residents of Santa Clarita Valley east side communities were left in the dark overnight after an electrical transformer blew in their area Monday night, a utility spokeswoman said.

Shortly after 6:30 p.m. Monday, a transformer owned and operated by Southern California Edison malfunctioned near Sierra Highway and Friendly Valley Parkway, said utility spokeswoman Anna Frutos-Sanchez.

“Initially, we had 1,600 customers out,” she said.

Technicians successfully restored power, but a second breach in the system occurred during the repairs, causing 100 residents to lose electrical service overnight.

Power was fully restored at 4:48 a.m., Frutos-Sanchez said.
