Springfield College junior Nick Ferry, a Valencia High graduate, digs the ball during an NCAA Division III championship match against Nazareth College on Sunday in Rochester, N.Y.

For the second straight year, Valencia High graduate Nick Ferry got to experience a national championship.
But he says this one is even more satisfying.

Ferry helped Springfield College claim the 2013 NCAA Division III Men’s Volleyball title on Sunday with a 3-0 win over Nazareth College in Rochester, N.Y.

Springfield won by set scores of 25-18, 25-13 and 25-22 with Ferry as a starting libero.

The 2010 Valencia graduate who was named The Signal’s All-Santa Clarita Valley Boys Volleyball Player of the Year recorded a match-high seven digs in Sunday’s championship match.

With a total of 34 digs in the NCAA tournament, Ferry was named to the All-Tournament team.

Ferry, a junior at Springfield, was also part of Springfield’s 2012 NCAA title.

“I feel like after you win and find that success, it’s going to take twice as much focus and twice as much effort to win the second time,” Ferry said.

It made it even more special due to the fact that Springfield lost to Nazareth in the 2011 NCAA championship match when Ferry was a freshman.

That season he was honored as an NCAA All-American First-Team selection.

This year, Ferry started 30 matches at libero and he led the team with 249 digs. Springfield College, which is located in western Massachusetts, finished the year with a 32-3 record.

“It’s a different type of playing over here. ... I knew I was joining a volleyball program, I didn’t know I was joining a family,” Ferry said.
