The 17th annual Castaic Town Council 5K Run/Walk at Castaic Lake Sunday drew nearly 500 running enthusiasts, their families and friends for a day of fun in the sun – complete with pancakes – to raise funds for local schools, clubs and organizations.

First to cross the 5K finish line was Joel Givens of Valencia with a time of 18 minutes, 49 seconds and 5 tenths of a second.

Bryce Brauneisen secured second place with a time of 19:28:3.

Just a few paces behind him was 9-year-old Jaden Wiley at 20:04:6.

Givens and Wiley collapsed at the finish line, each with his respective family of fellow running enthusiasts.

Givens hugged his son Brennan, 5, who wore bib number 950, and 4-year-old daughter Faith, in bib 949, then looked over at Jaden’s parents and said: “Your son is a talented runner.”

Jaden ran with his father, Bob, and his sister, Brielle, age 11.

Scores of people turned out for the fundraising event, said organizer Flo Lawrence.

“The is the best of what we do as a nation,” he said reflecting on the spirit of Sunday’s runners and the spirit of those who took part in the recent ill-fated Boston Marathon.

“It’s exciting to see that our spirit isn’t broken,” he said. “We brought community and family together, friends and fitness together, fellowship and laughter together.”

A few of Sunday’s runners got a little more than they bargained for when someone set up one of the route signs incorrectly.

“Someone had turned the sign around on the course,” Lawrence said.

“And some runners ended up doing three and half kilometers when others did one (kilometer), So we’re giving special medals to those people,” he said.

“But, despite all that, everyone had a good time.”

Sunday’s races included a 10-mile run and a 1K for the kids. Funds raised go to local schools and service organizations through the Castaic Area Town Council.
