Cyclists Bob DiPimio, left, and Irene Johnson, center, of Santa Clarita Velo, join city of Santa Clarita Mayor Bob Kellar at the start of the Mayor's Ride event held at Iron Horse Trailhead in Valencia on Saturday. The 6-mile ride included roughly 20 people.

About 20 people turned out Saturday morning to accompany Santa Clarita Mayor Bob Kellar on a ride to kick off a series of events ahead of the 2013 Amgen Tour of California bike race that will roll into town in May.

“The Amgen Tour covers more than 750 miles,” Kellar said. “I’m glad we’re not going that far today.”

Saturday’s event, called the Mayor’s Ride, took participants on a six-mile loop from the Iron Horse Trailhead off Magic Mountain Parkway.

The ride was a mostly casual affair, with participants taking about 35 minutes to complete the 6-mile trek.

“I know some people were referring to this as a race,” Kellar told the group. “But this old timer is going to be conservative today.”

For some participants, the Mayor’s Ride wasn’t even their first time on a bike that day. Jim and Steffany Marshall rode about 4 miles to the Iron Horse Trailhead from their home in Valencia.

“We just love biking,” Steffany Marshall said as she gripped her handlebars. “It seemed like a good way to start the day.”

The Amgen Tour of California, a stage bike race, will roll into town for a stage finish on Tuesday, May 14, and a stage start Wednesday, May 15.

This is the fifth year the city has been a part of the tour, Kellar said.

“What a great family event,” Kellar said of the tour. “And the city is going to hold a lot of ancillary activities that really add to the excitement of that event.”

Some of those activities include a bike to work day and a bike-themed Senses on Main event in Newhall, which will both be held Thursday, May 16.

Kellar said Saturday that it had been a few months since he had ridden his bike, but he was happy to get back in the saddle to lead the Mayor’s Ride.

“I can’t think of any better way to kick off the weekend,” Kellar said.
