LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles police have arrested an auto theft suspect after a wild pursuit.

A KCAL-TV helicopter followed the car as it sped down Interstate 405 at an estimated 100 mph Friday.

The car turned onto Interstate 10 and the driver jumped out as it was still moving. The man was struck by the car door, fell to the pavement and almost was run over by his own car. He still managed to flee through roadside brush.

Wearing bright red pants, the suspect ran through a neighborhood and entered a house where painters were working. He emerged after changing into drab shorts and a white shirt.

Arriving police officers were not fooled and the man quickly surrendered.

Police Sgt. Martin Spann tells KCAL the pursuit began in the San Fernando Valley.
