Einstein Academy turns sights to Acton-Agua Dulce for charter

Officials from the Albert Einstein Academy for Letters, Arts and Sciences have turned to Acton-Agua Dulce in their quest for an elementary charter school in the Santa Clarita Valley.

The latest charter petition would permit Einstein to open an elementary school in the Acton-Agua Dulce Unified School District, according to Eddie Nathan, associate director of the Einstein Academy foundation.

A charter grants public school funds to schools created within a community to give parents choices.

The petition represents the latest attempt from Einstein to gain approval for an elementary school to accompany its existing school for students in grades 7 to 12 in the William S. Hart Union High School District.

Saugus Union School District recently turned Einstein down a fourth time. The Newhall, William S. Hart and Los Angeles Unified school districts have also rejected elementary school petitions from Einstein.

Nathan said Friday the petition with Agua Dulce would entail construction of a physical school, though the school would not necessarily be located in Acton or Agua Dulce.

“We’re trying to secure the best possible physical location that is best for the students. It could be Acton; it could be Saugus,” Nathan said.

But locating the school outside the Acton-Agua Dulce area would skirt the intention of California’s charter school law, said Saugus Union School District Superintendent Joan Lucid.

“If indeed they want a charter school, then the charter school should be located in Acton,” Lucid said Friday. “That was the purpose of the charter law, not to apply in one and then open it in another location.”

Officials from the Acton-Agua Dulce district could not be reached for comment this week.

In rejecting Einstein charters, officials with both Newhall and Saugus districts have cited concerns with Einstein’s finances, as well as its ability to provide adequate educational resources to English-language-learners and special-needs students.
