A 29-year-old Hispanic man is recovering in the hospital Tuesday after being stabbed an estimated seven times in an alcohol-fueled altercation in Newhall Monday night, a sheriff’s official said.

“The victim is still in hospital and he is expected to survive,” Deputy Josh Dubin of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station said Tuesday.

Shortly before midnight Monday, deputies were called to a disturbance in 23700 block of Valle Del Oro, Dubin said.
“It was some altercation at the bottom of the stairs by the apartments there,” he said.

Early reports indicate the man was stabbed seven times before being rushed to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital.

Detectives assigned to the sheriff’s Career Offender Burglary Robbery Apprehension team are investigating the incident.

“We’re looking into the gang thing, but we’re leaning away from it since this guy was not a documented gang member,” said Sgt. Dean Currie, who heads up the COBRA unit.

“My guys have been out there interviewing for a good part of the day,” Currie said.

One of the detectives returned to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital to interview the victim and the man’s wife, he said.

With the investigation in its “preliminary stage,” detectives have little to go on.

“We know there was drinking. There were beer cans under a carport area in the parking lot,” Currie said. “There was a confrontation, a fight ensued and in the process, a man was stabbed.”

Paramedics with the Los Angeles County Fire Department dispatched to the stabbing arrived at the scene at 11;59 p.m., said Inspector Anthony Akins.

“They were cleared to enter the scene by sheriff’s deputies and at 11 minutes after midnight transported one person to hospital,” he said.

Investigators are looking for one suspect described as a 25-year-old Hispanic man.

They are expected to continue interviewing people in the neighborhood to learn more about the incident.
