Canyon learned the difference between tape and live action Wednesday.

The Cowboys lost 69-41 to No. 1 seeded Thousand Oaks in the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Division IIAA playoffs on the road.

“They are shockingly good,” said Canyon head coach Chad Phillips of the Lancers. “When you look at them on film nothing particularly stands out. But they’re shockingly good on the court.”

Phillips said his team struggled with the Lancers’ size throughout.

The teams were tied at 14-14 early, but Canyon turned the ball over four straight times and allowed six straight points.

Thousand Oaks (25-2) took off from there.

The Cowboys (8-19) turned the ball over 22 times in the game.

Canyon senior Jonathan Lawson scored 14 points and senior Mike Edwards added nine.

Phillips already has planned some changes for next year. He said he will go away from the dribble-drive motion offense installed this season and will build around freshman center Brandon Perry.

“We definitely know that’s our strength,” Phillips said of Perry. “We’re going to utilize him as much as possible.”

Phillips cited his success with recent big men such as Kris Rincon and Cody Anderson as examples.
