A Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's deputy uses a baton as he searches for a gun in the bushes near the corner of Fahren Court and Sandy Drive in Canyon Country. A young man was arrested for brandishing a gun near that location on Friday.

Sheriff’s deputies arrested a juvenile suspected of brandishing a gun in Canyon Country on Friday, but a search of the area that shut down some roads failed to reveal a weapon, officials said.

Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station Lt. Mark Hershey said the suspect was detained shortly after 1 p.m.
Arrested was a 17-year-old male, according to Deputy Josh Dubin. Because the suspect is a minor, his name was not released.

Deputies were flagged down around 12:20 p.m. by a citizen who pointed out an individual allegedly holding a gun.

When deputies attempted to make contact with the man, he fled with a companion, Hershey said.

Deputies then saw that the man was holding a gun in his hand, according to Hershey.

Deputies blocked the intersections of Sierra Highway with Jakes Way and Sandy Drive to search for the two 12:30 p.m., Hershey said. The two intersections were reopened after the suspect was detained.

A helicopter was also called to the scene to aid in the search.

Deputies search the area for the gun, but it still had not been located at 5 p.m., Dubin said. The weapon was described as a black semiautomatic handgun.

Dubin said the man was also in possession of a small amount of methamphetamine when he was arrested and is suspected of having ties to gang activity.

“But that’s still under investigation,” Dubin said.
