When the ball left his bat, Canyon Cowboys senior Micah Moyle had one thing on his mind: “Just run.”

With two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth, Moyle beat out the throw of Hart shortstop Nick Valaika, allowing Chris Serrano to score the winning run in a 6-5 Canyon victory on Wednesday at Canyon High.

The victory keeps Canyon in a four-way tie for first place in the Foothill League.

“Just run down the line and hopefully be safe,” said Moyle of what he was thinking while sprinting toward first base. “Hopefully I get that run in and win the game.”

He did just that, as his ground ball took a high bounce over pitcher Jack Ralston and had to be dug out by Valaika.

The run gave Canyon its first lead of the game and sent the Cowboys pouring onto the field in celebration while many Hart players look on in disbelief.

The Indians held a 5-1 lead entering the bottom of the seventh, with senior pitcher Aaron Hamilton on the mound to close it out.

But the Cowboys loaded the bases with a single, a walk and hit-by-pitch before Christopher Jenkins sent a two-out double down the left field line to pull within 5-3.

Senior Max Weinstein stepped into the box next and hit a 2-2 fastball back up the middle to score Jeremy Leonardo and Jenkins and tie the score.

“I’ve got to try and stay relaxed. Of course the adrenaline is pumping like no other,” Weinstein said of the situation. “But (I had to) stay simple.”

The result wasted a solid effort from Hart starting pitcher Chad Haslock, who tossed five innings and allowed one earned run on three hits, with three strikeouts and three walks.

“Canyon outplayed us in the last two innings,” said Hart head coach Jim Ozella. “It was our game for the taking. We’ve got our guy on the mound to finish it up and he didn’t finish it.”

As has been the case this season — most notably in a 5-4 loss to Hart earlier in the season — errors nearly led to a Cowboys’ loss.

Tied 1-1 in the sixth, with Canyon pitcher Blake Leidholdt holding his own on the mound, Cowboys left fielder Cole Mears dropped a routine fly ball with two outs off the bat of Cody Miller.

After a single, the Cowboys continued to get in their own way, as Leidholdt appeared to pick Joseph Bilbo off first base when he broke for second, but the ball was thrown into center field, scoring Miller and giving Hart the 2-1 advantage.

The ensuing batter sent a ground ball to Jenkins at second, which was booted and ended up in right field, scoring Bilbo.

The Cowboys committed another error in the sixth, as Hart increased its lead to 5-1 before Canyon’s bats woke up.

“The offense pulled it out with big hits when we needed it most,” said Canyon head coach Adam Schulhofer. “Now (we go) from feeling defeated and having beaten ourselves to we pulled it out and got some momentum.”
