A preliminary hearing was set Wednesday for a Castaic man charged with attempted murder after he allegedly beat a disabled man with a “mini baseball bat” inside a Sunland bar last month, a court official said.

Ronald Lee Holt, 45, of Castaic appeared in San Fernando Superior Court Wednesday and entered a plea of not guilty to the felony charge against him, the court clerk.

He was ordered to appear back in court next month for a preliminary hearing, the clerk said. During that hearing, prosecutors will present evidence in the case, and the defense can respond, after which the judge will decide if the case should go to trial.

Holt was arrested March 19 after Santa Clarita Valley sheriff’s deputies followed him from his home on Ridge Route Road.

They began watching the home after being notified by Los Angeles Police Department detectives that Holt was wanted for assault with a deadly weapon and attempted homicide.

Prosecutors allege Holt “personally inflicted great bodily injury” on wheelchair-bound Lance Love inside a bar on Foothill Boulevard in Sunland on March 18 and that he used “a deadly and dangerous weapon,” according to their complaint.

The alleged attack happened after bartenders refused to serve a man who was drunk, LAPD Officer Sara Faden told The Signal shortly after Holt’s arrest.

“He became angry and left the bar,” Faden said of the man. “But he returned to the bar and struck a bar patron with a mini baseball bat.”

She described the bat as a 27-inch “promotional type” bat.

Police identified the attacker as Holt.

Love, who suffers from cerebral palsy and his limited mobility, is recovering from the attack, LAPD Detective Anthony Stephenson said Wednesday.

“He’s definitely improving,” he said.
