PALMDALE (AP) — Authorities say a 13-year-old boy who ran away from home and may have taken his father's gun shot himself at a restaurant and later died at a hospital.

LA County sheriff and coroner's officials say Nigel Hardy died Monday night.

He was last seen by family members Monday morning. His father found a suicide note in his room and learned his gun was missing.

Kern County sheriff's spokesman Ray Pruitt says a boy, later confirmed as Hardy, shot himself at Crazy Otto's restaurant in Rosamond about 20 miles north of his home.

The restaurant's owner tells the Antelope Valley Press that the boy asked a waiter to call his father before pulling out the gun.

Officials say the boy was despondent after being suspended from school.
