West Ranch pitcher Cody Bennett deals to Canyon on Friday at West Ranch High.

West Ranch senior side-slinging pitcher Cody Bennett has verbally committed to Sonoma State University, according to West Ranch Wildcats head coach Casey Burrill.

Bennett, a returning All-Foothill League and All-Santa Clarita Valley first-team pitcher has been one of the Santa Clarita Valley’s premier pitchers two years running.

Bennett was 6-4 with a 2.47 ERA last season and struck out 53 batters in 68 innings pitched.

This season, the Wildcats’ ace is 6-1 with a 2.37 ERA with 49 strikeouts in 44 1/3 innings.

"They’re getting a guy with a rubber arm, a guy who can throw three pitches for strikes and can throw backwards," Burrill said. "He’s a fierce competitor, someone who has a great mound presence."

Burrill said Bennett had an interest in playing outside of Southern California and the Northern California school really wanted the senior pitcher.
