Forest access critical for healthy kids

I was pleased to see your coverage on the National Parks Service’s recommendations on the National Recreation Area.
The San Gabriel Mountains, which I have hiked all my life, are is a very special place to me and shaped much of my family life as a child as well as my interests in botany and biology.
I see this recommendation as a positive initial step toward broader protection of the rare and endangered plants and animals that live there, as well as a step toward cleaner water and air.
I currently work with at-risk kids in Santa Clarita, and the incidence of obesity and diabetes in these kids is very high. It is important that everyone have access to the forest for hiking as well as other activities to improve their health and well-being.
Forest protection in L.A. is important for the entire population, as well as the ecology. I look forward to legislation for a broader-scale national recreation area.
