The Angeles Chapter of the Sierra Club announced Thursday it opposes Castaic Lake Water Agency’s takeover of Valencia Water Co. and requests an investigation into the deal.

Letters sent to California Attorney General Kamala Harris and the California Public Utilities Commission list objections to the takeover and ask both agencies to formally investigate the transaction.

Castaic Lake Water Agency, a water wholesaler in the Santa Clarita Valley, agreed to buy Valencia Water Co., a water retailer, during a stock purchase that the water agency says will give it both ownership and control of the retailer.

Legislation was required to approve a similar deal years earlier when the wholesaler took over another retailer, now called the Santa Clarita Water Division of the Castaic Lake Water Agency.

CLWA officials say no such legislative action is required this time.
