Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station deputies responded to a report of a dead body discovered off of San Francisquito Canyon Road at about 4:45 p.m. Wednesday, according to a Homicide Bureau detective.

Maintenance workers noticed a “foul smell,” said Lt. Eddie Hernandez of the Sheriff’s Department’s Homicide Bureau.

Department of Water and Power workers were conducting regular maintenance about five miles south of Spunky Canyon Road, where they detected the “strange odor” coming from behind bushes about 20 feet off the road, Hernandez said.

The DWP workers contacted the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station, and homicide detectives are investigating the scene as a suspicious death, Hernandez said.

Hernandez could not link the body to any missing persons reports in the area, but he said that is something they will consider as they continue the investigation.

The body was covered in a tarp or a bag, leaving only human legs visible, Hernandez said.

The sex of the body could not be identified at the time because the body could not be moved until the coroner arrived on scene.

Shortly after 7 p.m., sheriff’s investigators called the Los Angeles County Coroner to join homicide detectives on scene.

“They’re still out there,” said a spokesman for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station, at 11:45 p.m.

Signal Senior Staff Writer Jim Holt contributed to this report.
