Coming off one of Southern California’s most challenging spring break tournaments, Valencia Vikings baseball has its trap week.

The Vikings are halfway home to getting through it.

Valencia defeated the Foothill League’s last-place Golden Valley Grizzlies 8-3 on Wednesday at Golden Valley High.

Prior to the break, Valencia’s batters were struggling with their approaches at the plate.

With the prospect of letting their swings get too big against the struggling Grizzlies, the Vikings stayed within themselves with their approaches on Wednesday.

“That was a big thing. We were working on discipline, at keeping disciplined,” said Valencia head coach Jared Snyder. “Getting our pitch and not swinging at bad pitches any more. It’s one of those things — as the year goes on, pitching gets better than hitting and you have to take disciplined at-bats.”

Valencia (12-6 overall, 4-2 Foothill League) struck with four runs in the first inning and knocked Golden Valley starting pitcher Tyler Ryan out of the game.

Anthony Lepre, Devon Davis, Hunter Holland and Jared Oliva all knocked in runs with singles.

Chris McCready singled in a run in top of the fourth and another run came in on a Golden Valley error, and the Vikings took a 6-0 lead.

Golden Valley (1-16, 0-6) scored a run in each of the next three frames to cut the lead to 6-3.

The Grizzlies scored on a Billy Fredrick ground-out in the bottom of the fourth, a Josh Lampariello double in the fifth and a Chris Galvez single in the sixth.

But Valencia starter J.D. Busfield prevented the Grizzlies from getting the big inning.

He pitched a complete game, surrendering seven hits and the three earned runs, while striking out eight and allowing no walks.

Valencia, which went 3-2 in the spring break Anaheim Lions Tournament, added two more runs in the seventh — with one coming on an A.J. Balta double.

The Vikings host Golden Valley on Friday.
