Bouquet getting repaved

Sections of the road are scheduled for overnight upkeep and resurfacing

Bouquet Canyon Road is getting a makeover.

Unless drivers are using the road at night, however, they won’t see the work being done to repave a main thoroughfare through the Santa Clarita Valley.

Daytime drivers only see the evidence of the road work, which is done each night, as layers of the street that are ground down between the hours of 9 p.m. and 5 a.m.

The overlay of Bouquet Canyon Road between Newhall Ranch Road and Magic Mountain Parkway is “a multi-step process,” said Curtis Nay, assistant city engineer for Santa Clarita.

“We’re grinding, paving, striping and rebuilding the traffic loops,” Nay said.

Traffic loops help operate the traffic signals and keep drivers moving by detecting cars on the street.

Two different layers of rubberized asphalt are being laid down, Nay said. The city has been using the rubber-based overlays on all newly repaved streets because it results in a quieter drive, he said.

“We’ve found it to be a real good product,” Nay said. “It’s longer lasting and reduces traffic noise. The rubberized asphalt lasts about 15 years, often longer.”

Funds for the repaving projects come from state and local sources, including a statewide sales tax on diesel fuel and one-quarter percent of the general state sales tax.

The city collected $6,883,941 for the 2013/2014 fiscal year, and it is still in the process of identifying roads that need upkeep, Nay said in an earlier interview.

Using a pavement management system, visual inspections of roads are input into a computer program that rates the pavement condition. Roads are then ranked and scheduled for repair.
