The suspect in the Santa Clarita Valley’s lone 2012 murder case was ordered Thursday to face a preliminary hearing in San Fernando Superior Court.

Cesar Navarro, 21, will appear in court May 9 for a hearing that will determine whether he should face trial for stabbing a Newhall man to death in December.

Navarro is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Francis Olea, 28.

Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station deputies were called to Olea’s Newhall residence Dec. 2 on a report of a car alarm going off in front of his house between Chestnut and Walnut streets, deputies reported in December.
They found Olea stabbed in his driveway.

He was taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Navarro was arrested in January after deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department used a series of witness interviews to craft an artist’s sketch of the suspect.

That sketch led them to Navarro as the prime suspect in the crime, according to sheriff’s officials.

Navarro is being held at the Pitchess Detention Center in Castaic in lieu of $1.07 million bail.
