The Santa Clarita-based Small Business Development Center had its most successful year to date in 2012, according to the business assistance center on Wednesday.

The SBDC helped business owners start 53 new small businesses, and create or retain 937 jobs, it reported in an annual report.

In 2012, the SBDC provided free consulting services to 869 small businesses and directly trained more than 3,100 entrepreneurs and small business owners in its region, covering the Santa Clarita, San Fernando and Antelope Valleys.

Small business owners working with the local SBDC saw their sales grow by a combined $19 million in 2012, while securing $12.5 million of new capital — figures which represent a roughly 169 percent increase since 2009.

SBDC clients also saw an average increase of $4,720 in new sales and $3,107 in new capital raised for every hour of consulting received — while combining to create an average of one new business every week.

“Over the past year SBDC clients achieved record breaking results across every significant category,” said Steve Tannehill, SBDC Executive Director. “Now in our sixth year of operation, the SBDC’s high level of success continues to grow as we develop more partnerships, launch new programs and expand our roster of expert business advisors.”
In the past year, the SBDC also launched three new programs – a Center for International Trade Development, Center for Entrepreneurship & Growth, and a Restaurant Start Smart Assistance Program.

The SBDC is located on the College of the Canyons Valencia campus.
