I-5 through Grapevine open -- for now

The Grapevine section of Interstate 5 reopened at 4 p.m. escorting traffic in both directions, according to a California Highway Patrol officer.

The CHP made the decision to reopen at 3:30 p.m., and it took 30 minutes to get the plan rolling, CHP Officer Jose Nunez said.

The escorts will continue indefinitely and motorists should check the CHP Web site before traveling through the Grapevine to make sure the road isn't closed again.

"There is more precipitation expected and temperatures will drop overnight, which could mean more snow and road closures," Nunez said.

Heavy snow prompted the California Highway Patrol to shut down I-5 through the Grapevine area early Monday morning.

CHP officers closed northbound side of I-5 at Parker Road, Officer David Porter said. The southbound lanes closed at Grapevine Road.

The closure started at 3:24 a.m., Porter said.
