Rio Vista Elementary School students listen as City of Santa Clarita tree trimmer Joe Rowles discusses proper planting techniques as part of Eco-Career Day event.

Teachers and volunteers at Rio Vista Elementary School took a day to go green last week to teach students about ecology, sustainability and community service during the school’s seventh annual Eco-Career Days event.

"The thought process behind the event is that students are the future generation and they’re responsible for maintaining a livable world," said Rio Vista Assistant Principal Mary Mann.

As part of Thursday’s event, which Mann described as a "mini-conference," students attended presentations from local community members as well as business leaders involved in sustainable or community service activities.

Mann said more than 20 people volunteered to give presentations at this year’s event.

Aside from presentations, students went on teacher-led hikes, learned some sustainable gardening techniques, planted trees and visited some of the animals at the Placerita Canyon Nature Center during the all-day event, Mann said.

Representatives from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s and Fire departments were also on hand to show youngsters the importance of community service.

"There are many people out here who contribute to our society," Mann said. "We wanted to tell our students how those professions really do help us."

All of the school’s some-800 students participated in the event, Mann said.
