A small fire broke out in the dry bed of Bouquet Creek near Bridgeport in Valencia late Saturday evening, an official with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station said.

Lt. John Rush of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station said a call came in around 6:21 p.m. of smoke in the area of McBean Parkway near Bridgeport.

Crews from the Sheriff’s Station and Los Angeles County Fire Department responded to the scene.

At Bridgeport, Deputy William Formica said the fire was relatively small when he arrived on scene shortly after the call came in.

Formica said the fire flamed up a bit as it reached the trees in the wash.

The fire belched smoke into the skies above Valencia for almost two hours, but fire crews had the blaze mostly contained as of 8:10 p.m. Several dozen resident of Bridgeport turned out to watch the fire, cheering on fire crews as they went into the wash.

Formica said it is unclear what started the fire, but said some witnesses had reported seeing a small spark like that of a firework or bottle rocket prior to the fire starting.

Fire crews were still on scene at 8:40 p.m., according to an official from the Fire Department.
