It's been wet, wild and cold this week. It's lovely weather for growing things. I noticed that patches scorched by the Sayre Fire are starting to sprout some beautiful emerald shoots.

The big benefit of all this rain is the lovely hills of green we'll have in short order. The rain should bring out the wildflowers, too. Join "Wildflower Wendy" in stalking the wildflowers on an easy hike 10 a.m. Saturday in East and Rice canyons. For more information visit www.lamountains.com or call (310) 858-7272 ext. 115.

2009 MWOY nominations needed
Nomination applications are now available for the Santa Clarita Valley 2009 Man and Women of the Year.

The award honors men and women who have given outstanding volunteer service to the SCV. The winners will be announced at a recognition dinner May 8 at the Hyatt Valencia.

It is stunning the number of outstanding candidates that are nominated for this prestigious award each year.

Volunteer service is defined by long-time community commitment (not work-related), the impact of the service, years of service and number of organizations the individual has served. All applications must be submitted by a nonprofit organization by the Feb. 27 deadline.

Applications and information are available online www.scvmanandwomanoftheyear.com.

Last year's winners, Carl Goldman and Judy Penman, will chair this year's festivities. For more information, call Carl Goldman (661) 298-1220.

Fish Fry begins Feb. 27
One of my favorite times of the year is nearly at hand. The St. Clare's Catholic Church Lenten Fish Fries begin Feb. 27 and continue every Friday through April 3. Serving hours are 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Proceeds benefit the SCV Food Pantry, St. Francis Counseling Center and other local charities.

This is one of the best deals in town, the fish and chips are not to be missed. I always have a hard time deciding between the rice pilaf or the fries. They're both good and the coleslaw is fabulous, too. St. Clare's Catholic Church is located at 19606 Calla Way, Canyon Country.

Midwinter Madrigal Feast
The Santa Clarita Master Chorale will host a fund-raising event Sunday, March 1 in the Grand Ballroom at the Valencia Hyatt, 24500 Town Center Drive, Valencia.

Enjoy an evening of merriment and revelry which includes dinner, a comical play, special music by members of the Santa Clarita Master Chorale and opportunity drawings. Attire is black tie optional. Admission is $100. For more information, call (661) 254-8886, go online at www.scmasterchorale.org or e-mail info@scmasterchorale.org.

I enjoy events that try to entertain as well as raise funds for a good cause, and this event is one that hits the mark.

Send your recipes to Soroptimist
I love cookbooks, and I really enjoy cookbooks compiled by my friends and neighbors. The Soroptimist International of Santa Clarita Valley is collecting recipes by SCV residents for a special cookbook, "Food for Thought - Recipes and Inspirations."

Recipes should be submitted as a Word document and include category and contact information. Categories are: Appetizers, soups/salads, breads, vegetables, entrees, sauces and desserts. Submit your recipes to Sharyn Quinn at sharynq@lbwinsurance.com by March 5.
