The city of Santa Clarita will build a new landscape median on Railroad Avenue from north of the Via Princessa overcrossing to 13th Street in Newhall after City Council members voted to approve the project Tuesday night.

The location for the median was chosen for two reasons, according to the project proposal. First, to “bring the look and benefits of well-maintained medians located throughout the city to the Newhall community”; and second, to “enhance the Railroad Avenue gateway within the city,” according to the proposal.

The total budget for the project is $199,745, though actual construction is only projected to cost $181,545.

Council members voted to award the contract for the project to Penfield and Smith, a civil engineering firm with offices throughout Southern California.
