The message Saturday was “pay it forward,” and members of New Life in His Presence church weren’t just delivering that message, they were living it — by way of a car wash.

As drivers lined up in the parking lot of Kmart to take advantage of the Newhall church’s $1 car wash offer, they were surprised to discover the price of the service wasn’t just cheap — it was free.

“We got tons of people who came up to pay and said, ‘I can’t believe this is only a dollar,’” said Laura Hillman, a member of the church. “Then they found out we were giving them their dollar back and they were shocked.”

To sweeten the deal even more, a bag of Easter goodies was handed over with the dollar.

The refund was the main crux of the event, said church Senior Pastor Mauricio Ruiz. The goal was to encourage patrons to take their dollars and “pay it forward” to help someone else in the community.

“We’re hoping we can inspire people in the city to always try and find the needs of others,” Ruiz said. “There are more needs than there are people in this valley, so if everyone did something, we could make a real difference.”

Ruiz said about 45 members of the church helped with the car wash and about 90 cars had come through three hours into the event.

One of those cars belonged to Newhall resident Sherri Risley, who said she was shocked to learn she would be getting her dollar back.

Risley also said she thought the event was a nice way to encourage people to give back to the community.

“Right away I started thinking about what I could do, who I could help,” Risley said. “This was a very nice thing for them to do.”
