Two hikers were rescued by the sheriff's search and rescue team late Friday after they were unable to maneuver steep terrain at Placerita Canyon State Park in Newhall, sheriff's officials said.

Using his cell phone, Kevin Roberts called Santa Clarita Valley Station at about 7:30 p.m. Friday to report himself stuck on the face of a rock on the Los Pinetos Hiking Trail, officials said.  He also said he had become separated from his girlfriend, officials reported.

The search and rescue team was deployed along with a county fire helicopter. Officials said the team found Roberts and his girlfriend, Felicia Nau unharmed two miles from the trailhead. They said they were unable to make their way down the steep terrain due to darkness.
