West Ranch's Kevin Harris (21) shoots against Hart defender Andrew MacArthur (4) at Hart High. Harris has announced he will attend the University of California, San Diego in the fall.

West Ranch senior guard and 2013 Foothill League Boys Basketball Player of the Year Kevin Harris committed this week to play basketball for the University of California, San Diego.

Harris averaged 19 points per game in Foothill League play leading the Wildcats to their first-ever outright league title. He was also an All-Foothill League and The Signal All-Santa Clarita Valley first-teamer as a junior.

Harris, a 4.08 GPA student, had other interest, according to West Ranch head coach Shant Bicakci, but the future engineering student chose the NCAA Division II program for the academic and basketball opportunities.

“He can shoot and jump and is so talented physically, but that kid mentally puts everything into everything he does,” Bicakci said.

Harris is one of the main attractions to Saturday’s The Signal’s fourth annual SCV Hoops Finale at Valencia High, which is a benefit for the William S. Hart Union School District’s WiSH Foundation.

He and teammate Ako Kaluna, who committed to Northern Arizona University earlier this year, will play in the boys game at 7 p.m. and participate in the GenX Premium Energy Drinks Slam Dunk Contest at halftime.

“It’s going be a good time with those two in the slam dunk contest. They’ll get people off their feet,” Bicakci said.
