VALLEJO (AP) — A suspected bank robber released from jail earlier this month is back in custody again after being arrested in Vallejo, officials said.

Gary Fite Jr. was arrested without incident by a team of 12 FBI agents, local police and sheriff's deputies around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, FBI spokeswoman Julie Sohn said.

Fite, 22, of nearby Oakland, had been wanted since he walked out of a Contra Costa County jail on March 5. Immediately after his release, officials said he had been released by mistake. But sheriff's spokesman Jimmy Lee said Tuesday that Fite had been released because he had "timed out," or since charges had not been filed within a legal deadline, he could no longer be held.

"We had no authority to hold him," Lee said.

Fite had previously been arrested on suspicion of robbery and other charges after a robbery of a Mechanics Bank branch in Pinole on March 1.

During the robbery, officials said Fite jumped over the counter, pointed a gun at a teller's head and demanded money. He fled the bank when the teller handed over cash, officials said.

The alleged getaway driver in the robbery, Regina Dean, 37, has also been arrested and was being held on suspicion of robbery and other charges.

Fite is due to make is his initial appearance in federal court in Oakland on Wednesday morning.
