About two dozen supporters joined City Council contender Dante Acosta on Monday to show support for his campaign on the steps of City Hall.

'Making his second bid for public office, Acosta said the one thing he learned from the June primary election was to start early.

While he spent only three months campaigning for the congressional primary against incumbent and fellow Republican Howard “Buck” McKeon, R-Santa Clarita, he announced his candidacy for City Council last weekend — some 13 months before the race.

“I learned that 13 months is a lot better than three months,” he quipped about his current campaign.

More than a dozen supporters — many of them teens, including his daughter Allie — wore white specially-printed promotional T-shirts.

“We love them and we want to support them,” Shelby Sparks said of the Acosta.

“People seem to like my message and I seem to resonate with their values,” he said Monday.

“What I want is responsible economic development,” he said.

Noting threats from other states to lure high-paying jobs out of California, Acosta said it is imperative that Santa Clarita hangs on to such jobs locally.

“I don’t want to have to visit my kids and grandkids in Texas,” he said.
