The Valencia Vikings doubles team of Chris Pope and Cameron Braun rose to the top at Saturday’s Spring Smash at Valencia High School.

The duo won the doubles tournament with an 8-1 victory over Arroyo Grande’s Derek Lakowske and Cole Laughton.

David Myers and Redele Bell, also from Valencia, finished third on the day.

In singles, Valencia fell just short of qualifying any players for the championship match.

Joey Fernicola and Chad LeDuff both lost in the semifinals before squaring off in the third-place match.

In that match, Fernicola defeated LeDuff 8-5.

The tournament consisted of schools from both in and outside of the Santa Clarita Valley, and gave a glimpse into what the rest of the league might have in store when it tries to dethrone defending champion Valencia.

Valencia, West Ranch, Canyon, Saugus, Hart and Golden Valley were all represented.

“There’s definitely some contenders,” Braun said of the rest of the league. “There’s great players coming up that have been definitely training.”
