Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s deputies are asking the public for any helpful information regarding suspects who broke into Dr. J. Michael McGrath Elementary School in Newhall and stole four classroom computers, said Lt. Brenda Cambra.

“This all happened over the weekend when no one was around,” said Michael Clear, assistant superintendant for the Newhall School District.

The suspects broke a window to get into the classroom, he said.

Deputies responded Monday when the break-in was discovered, Cambra said.

This is the second computer burglary case the school has experienced. The first occurred about three weeks ago when two computers were stolen, Clear said.

“It’s going to cost several thousand dollars to replace those computers, so it is coming out of our pocket to replace those,” Clear said. “It’s a loss for the students until they’re replaced.”

Clear said there are plans to replace the computers but school officials will wait and see if the suspects can be caught.

“A police report was filed and we will be taking measures to hopefully prevent this from happening again,” Clear said.

Clear said the school has seen some crime intermittently in their history, “but nothing recent or major, most the time it’s graffiti or minor vandalism. Nothing like this where equipment or property has been stolen.”
