Add local resident Dante Acosta to the ever-growing list of candidates for Santa Clarita City Council.

Acosta announced his intention to run in a news release, but had previously told The Signal he was heavily weighing a bid.

The Republican first made a bid for public office last year by trying to unseat longtime congressman Howard “Buck” McKeon, R-Santa Clarita.

Acosta said Saturday he was encouraged by members of the community to seek a council seat after that election.

Acosta became involved in politics after the death of his son, Army Spc. Rudy Acosta, in March 2011. Rudy Acosta, an Army combat medic, was killed by an Afghan guard.

"I feel a great sense of obligation and debt to the community," Acosta said. "And I want to do my part to ensure we have a continued vibrancy in the city of Santa Clarita."

Though the election is still more than a year away, the race for one of the three seats up for grabs in the April 2014 City Council election has already begun to take shape.

While City Council members Marsha McLean and Laurene Weste have confirmed they plan to run for re-election, longtime Councilman Frank Ferry said he will not seek re-election in April 2014.

Ferry’s decision opens up a council seat he has held since 1998. It also means 2014 will mark the end of a more-than-decade-long run during which Ferry, Mayor Bob Kellar, McLean and Weste have all served on the council together.

Besides McLean and Weste, Gloria Mercado-Fortine, a member of the William S. Hart Union High School District board, and Maria Gutzeit, president of the Newhall County Water District, have also told The Signal they plan to run for City Council in 2014.
