The Signal’s fourth annual SCV Hoops Finale is now days away and since the announcement of the game earlier in the week, an addition to the game has been made and players have given their commitments to play.

The Santa Clarita Valley’s annual senior all-star boys and girls basketball games will take place on March 23 at Valencia High School’s gymnasium with the girls’ game tipping off at 5 p.m. and the boys’ game starting at 7 p.m.

Admission to the games is $5.

Prior to the game, young basketball players will have the opportunity to learn basketball skills from longtime Santa Clarita Valley basketball coach Greg Hayes — who has been running basketball clinics in the Santa Clarita Valley for 30 years.

Hayes, the former head basketball coach at Canyon High and most recently co-head coach of Valencia High, will be conducting a basketball clinic for boys and girls fourth through eighth graders with a concentration on offensive skills.

Hayes will also give each participant his instructional DVD, called “Shooter!”

The clinic will begin at 3:30 p.m. and be conducted inside the Valencia High auxiliary gymnasium.

The entire package — clinic, DVD, food and admission to the games is $15.

“The best part about the game is basketball divides people in so many ways, it’s so intense. But the all-star game is kind of a healing time, personal time for everybody to enjoy each other as people and respect each,” Hayes said. “If the clinic can draw young kids out and see such a healthy environment, that’s a good reason to have a clinic and be part of the game and feel the spirit of the game and dream a little maybe watching the game.”

All proceeds from the clinic as well as all admission proceeds will benefit the William S. Hart Union High School District’s WiSH Education Foundation for special education programs throughout the school district.

The games themselves will feature unique matchups never seen in the Santa Clarita Valley before.

On the boys side, Valencia, Hart, Saugus and Santa Clarita Christian players will team up to play West Ranch, Golden Valley and Canyon players.

The girls game will feature Canyon, Golden Valley and West Ranch against Valencia, Hart and Saugus.

Both Foothill League players of the year — West Ranch’s Kevin Harris and Canyon’s Alia McCoy — have agreed to play in the game.

Harris will also participate in the slam-dunk contest at halftime of the boys game and McCoy will participate in the 3-point contest during halftime of the girls game.

West Ranch senior Ako Kaluna has also agreed to be in the dunk contest.

All rosters are subject to change.

We are asking people interested in attending the clinic to RSVP with Hayes at For questions about the game, contact Signal sports editor Cary Osborne at Tickets for the game and the kids clinic will be sold at the door on March 23, beginning at 3 p.m.
