Despite the Canyon boys basketball team being 1-7 in the Foothill League heading into Tuesday’s game against Saugus, the Cowboys’ head coach had one goal for his team.

“I didn’t tell them much, just find their smiles,” said Canyon head coach Chad Phillips. “I wanted them to just have fun out there and put the ball in the hoop.”

After a blistering second quarter, the Cowboys had smiles plastered on their face the rest of the night as Canyon routed the Centurions 76-53 at Saugus High.

In the first quarter, both teams played fairly even, but in the second Canyon (8-17, 2-7) did what it hadn’t done all year and used a 24-5 run spanning all eight minutes to take a 44-23 lead into the half.

“Everything finally clicked,” said Canyon’s Mike Edwards. “We have been struggling for a while and we finally got it together. We played as a team and it clicked.”

Edwards finished the game with 12 points while Jonathan Lawson finished with a game-high 13 for the Cowboys. Jawhar Purdy led the Centurions (10-15, 2-7) with 10 points.

Playing like a well-oiled machine for the first time in league play, Canyon scored from every spot on the floor using its solid transition game to open up the contest.

In the third quarter, the Cowboys quelled any hopes of a Saugus comeback with a 20-8 run to open the quarter and push their lead to 64-31 after a Tere Adams fast-break layup.

“It was a lot of fun,” said Phillips of watching his team’s play. “It was rewarding to watch us hit on all cylinders. I found my smile tonight.”
