Call it a soft opening to the Santa Clarita Valley prep swim season.

Though teams didn’t have all their best swimmers competing and the event didn’t count toward Foothill League records, Wednesday’s SCV Relays gave many of the league teams a chance to get in the pool as a team for the first time this spring.

The annual event at Santa Clarita Aquatics Center normally takes place in April, which is right in the middle of the league season, but it had to be moved up to this week due to pool availability from the city.

“It turned out to be a great move because it solidified the team unity and it was fun,” said Hart head coach Steve Neale. “Every single high school was decked out, wearing their new T-shirts.”

The Hart boys team won the overall meet 85-72 over Valencia, and the Vikings returned the favor on the girls side, edging out the Indians by one point, 76-75.

The Viking girls were aided by the late disqualification of a Hart swimmer in the 200-yard backstroke relay, but Valencia head coach Mike Bechtholdt was plenty satisfied with the day’s results.

“Our team swam really good. I was really happy with that,” Bechtholdt said. “We have a lot of young talent this year. Obviously we beat everybody else, so we’ve got a good team.”

Saugus, Canyon, West Ranch and Golden Valley rounded out the boys standings in that order.

The final girls standings were Valencia, Hart, Canyon, Saugus, West Ranch and Golden Valley.

The Indians, who have won 30 of the last 31 Foothill titles in girls swimming and 17 straight in boys swimming, reasserted themselves in Wednesday’s event.

Hart placed in the top two of every event other than the disqualification in the girls 200 backstroke relay.

Meet host West Ranch may have finished fifth in boys and girls, but it had two CIF-Southern Section Division I qualifying times in both the boys 200-yard medley relay and the 200 free relay.

Both races were swam by the team of Derek Chang, Josh Lin, Austin Choi and Alex Arnold.

“We had some good swims, got some learning experience today,” said West Ranch head coach Aaron Worby. “This is kind of like the first real meet for the kids so far.”

Notes: Hart won the girls junior varsity meet 78-60 over Saugus. Valencia, West Ranch, Golden Valley and Canyon followed in the standings. In boys JV Valencia won 82-79 over Hart, followed by Saugus, Golden Valley, Canyon and West Ranch.
