Despite an arrest made in last week’s attack of a woman inside her condo complex garage in Canyon Country, local sheriff’s deputies are still looking for a second man wanted for a similar attack on a woman nearly a year ago at the same complex, a local sheriff’s spokesman said Wednesday.

On March 29 at 8:15 a.m., a man assaulted and sexually battered a woman who lives in a condo in the same complex, Deputy Josh Dubin of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station said Wednesday.

That attack happened after the woman arrived at her condo and parked her car in the garage.

As she left the garage and walked down a nearby outdoor hallway, she was attacked by a man described as a Hispanic man, 25 to 30 years old, 5-foot-10 and 180 pounds, detectives said at the time.

“Throughout the incident, the suspect strangled the victim,” local detectives said in a special bulletin issued last year.

“A rape did not occur,” they said, in the release. “When the victim fought back, the suspect stole the victim’s purse and its contents. He then fled the location through the condominium complex and out of view.”

The same suspect had been spotted in the same area “moments before the assault/robbery” exposing himself to a second identified victim. The first offense was not reported until after the robbery and assault occurred.

Eleven months later, deputies are still looking for that attacker, Dubin said Wednesday.

On Tuesday, deputies arrested a 25-year-old Newhall construction worker for allegedly attacking a woman in her garage in the same complex, the American Beauty condominiums, last week, Dubin said.

The two incidents — although similar — are not believed to be related, said Dubin.

“This guy (arrested Thursday) was in prison at the time of the previous attack,” Dubin said. “So it couldn’t have been him.”

In the attack last Thursday, a woman was leaving her garage in the 18000 block of Saratoga Way about 6:30 p.m. when she was attacked.

The perpetrator forced the woman back into the garage and to the ground, but she fought back and was able to call out for help.

The suspect — described as 5-foot-8-inches and 170 pounds — then ran from the garage when the woman called for help.

A witness saw the suspect running through the complex, after being directed by the victim as to which way he ran, deputies said.

News of Thursday’s arrest and memories of last year’s attempted rape have some of tenants in the same area living in fear.

One American Beauty tenant said the layout of the sprawling condo complex lends itself to problems.

“The breeze ways are a constant problem,” he said Wednesday. “This place is so massive and there are so many cubby holes, it’s a big nightmare.”

Anyone with information about Thursday’s attack or the attack in March 2012 is asked to call Santa Clarita Valley sheriff’s deputies at 661-255-1121.
