The College of the Canyons Cougars men’s and women’s basketball teams learned their postseason matchups with Monday’s release of the California Community College Athletic Association Regional playoff brackets.

After winning its first Western State Conference, South Division title in six years, the COC men’s team earned a No. 6 seed in the 20-team Southern California bracket, where it will host 11th-seeded Allan Hancock College on Friday.

COC’s women’s team is a No. 9 seed in the 18-team women’s bracket. It will face No. 8 seed Long Beach City College on the road on Friday.

Both games are set for 7 p.m. tip-offs.

A win over Long Beach City could set up a potential matchup against Mt. San Antonio College, the state’s top-ranked team, in the following round on March 6.

The COC women finished 20-8 this season and took second place in the WSC South, which ended their seven-year streak as conference champions.

This year marks the 20th consecutive playoff appearance for the COC women’s team, which has reached the regional finals three times during its seven-year stretch as WSC South champions including a state semifinal appearance in 2007.

The Cougar men’s team also finished 20-8 this year, which marks its first 20-win season since 2006-07. That was also the last time the men’s team won a conference championship. That team then advanced to the final game of the Southern California Regionals and fell one win short of advancing to Sacramento for the CCCAA state semifinal.

“I think it does,” said COC men’s basketball head coach Howard Fisher on if his team has what it takes to make it to Sacramento. “I think we have to put together 40 minutes.”
