A third armored vehicle arrives in support of police and sheriff's officers.

STOCKTON, Calif. (AP) — Authorities have shot and killed a robbery suspect they say tried to run over two members of gang task force when they pulled the suspect over in Stockton Saturday night.

San Joaquin County sheriff's Deputy Les Garcia, a spokesman for the department, says a Stockton police officer and a sheriff's deputy stopped the suspect around 9 p.m. because the vehicle he was driving matched a vehicle used in an armed robbery on Friday.

Garcia says as the officer and deputy approached, the suspect put the vehicle in reverse and tried to run at least one of them over, prompting both the officer and deputy to open fire.

Officials say when the suspect was taken out of the car police found a loaded handgun in his waistband.

The police officer and the deputy were not hurt in the incident. They were placed on administrative leave while the incident is investigated.
