Meagan Elizabeth Carrier, killed in a crash early this month, kisses the head of her son Jack David Carrier. Her father, Corey W. Morley Sr., is now taking care of Jack at his Nevada home.

A Las Vegas man is waiting to hear from local investigators about the traffic collision that claimed the life of his daughter three weeks ago, he said Thursday.

On Feb. 3, shortly after 4 a.m., Meagan Elizabeth Carrier, 24, died when the 2007 Honda Pilot in which she was a passenger slammed into the back of a tractor-trailer stopped on the right shoulder just south of Templin Highway on Interstate 5, California Highway Patrol Officer Michael Gubelli said at the time.

The victim’s father, Corey W. Morley Sr., reached at his home in Las Vegas, said he’s still waiting to hear details of the fatal crash.

“I’m awaiting information about the accident,” he told The Signal.

The only contact he’s had with officials in California, he said, was with the coroner.

“They notified me Sunday (Feb. 3) morning at 9 a.m.,” he said, adding that he picked up his daughter’s remains last week.

Now the focus of his world is his daughter’s 18-month-old son, Jack David Carrier.

“I have him during the day,” Morley said on the phone from his Nevada home.

When asked about the child’s laughter heard in the background, he said it was his grandson playing with the family cats.

“The cats love to play with him,” he said.

Weapons offenses

Meanwhile, the driver of the 2007 Honda Pilot remains in custody charged with three felonies in connection with the crash.

James Samuel Buterbaugh, 25, of Bakersfield, is charged with vehicular manslaughter without gross negligence, possessing a “large capacity magazine” of ammunition and carrying a loaded handgun that was not registered, according to a copy of the criminal complaint filed by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office and obtained by The Signal.

On Feb. 11, one week after the crash, Buterbaugh appeared in San Fernando Superior Court where he was arraigned on the criminal charges. He entered a plea of not guilty, said District Attorney spokeswoman Jane Robison.

Buterbaugh was ordered to appear back in court next month on the charges against him, she said.

Memorial fund

Morley said his daughter, who worked in a medical office, was traveling through California on a business trip the weekend she died.

Funeral services were held for her in Las Vegas, where she was born and raised, Morley said.

Her family, including her mother, Sally, sister CJ and her widowed husband, David, have put together a memorial fund for the couple’s son, Jack.

Anyone wanting to contribute can make donations to Jack David Carrier at the Clark County Credit Union, P.O. Box 36490 in Las Vegas, NV 89133-6490.

They can also contact Corey Morley at 702-348-7071, he said.

More information can be obtained online at the family’s Facebook page called the Meagan Elizabeth Carrier Memorial Fund.
