Letters: A socialist by any other name is... a socialist

Leftists of late have become very defensive about being called socialist in their ideology, as typified by Kevin Buck’s column (Feb. 19, “Straw men live in glass houses”).

In defense, they always trot out the same old canard, a quote of one of the word’s dictionary definitions, claiming their policies differ somehow — exactly what Buck did in his column.

But reality tells a different story. Buck claims that Obama and Company aren’t socialists. I beg to differ.

I’ll point to Obama’s interference with the auto industry with the bailouts, and how secured creditors were basically told to pound sand while their ownership equity was turned over to the unions.

Obamacare is another prime example, with wealth redistribution from those who earn an income to those who don’t through the intermediary of a government program.

Obama’s own proclamation that if you own a business, you didn’t build that!

His constant harping on punishing success in this country through confiscatory and redistributive tax policies geared at — again — taking at the point of a government gun from those who produce wealth in order to give it to those who are unproductive.

Most tellingly, in recent years we’ve seen a constant and increasingly shrill demonization of the rich, a class that’s constantly being redefined downward, as if somehow it’s now become shameful to work hard and be successful.

This is the same rhetoric that was used in 1917 by Lenin and the Bolsheviks to foment the Russian Revolution, and by many other Marxist tyrants since.

American leftist/socialists don’t like being outed for what they really are, which is why they constantly try to throw up smokescreens and write screechy sanctimonious articles and columns.

But it simply won’t work, and more than a skunk can change its stripes. The people are catching on. They know a socialist when they see one.
