No Santa Clarita Valley winter sports team can say what Canyon girls basketball can.

Four years, four playoff quarterfinal appearances.

The Canyon Cowboys pulled off the accomplishment by defeating the Kaiser Cats in Fontana 74-40 on Wednesday in the second round of the CIF-Southern Section Division IIAA playoffs.

Canyon (24-4) now plays at third-seeded Lynwood in Saturday’s quarterfinal.

“I think our kids have always pushed themselves,” said Canyon head coach Chuck Johns on why his team has been so successful over the last four seasons. “One thing about our team is we seem to peak toward the end of the year. We break up the season into preseason, league season and postseason. We want to be at our best come postseason.”

Over the last four seasons, Canyon is 10-4 in playoff games, included in that is a trip to the state tournament in 2011.

The Cowboys led 11-6 after a quarter on Wednesday, but it could have been worse for the Cats (16-8). But Canyon struggled offensively.

Canyon outscored Kaiser 31-6 in the second quarter and 27-11 in the third to lead 69-23 going into the fourth quarter.

Canyon’s Alia McCoy scored a game-high 28 points.

She had 20 at halftime.

Kali Vittallo had 20 points and eight assists, hitting four 3-pointers.

She has scored 50 points and has made 11 3-pointers in two postseason games.

Jaya Schultz added 17 for the Cowboys.

Things get tougher now with 20-5 Lynwood — the No. 29 team in California, according to

“That will be tough,” Johns said. “They’re athletic, well-coached, play with energy and intensity, are defense first. They’re going to come after you.”
