Ken Pulskamp, retired Santa Clarita city manager, has been selected to be “served up” at the 15th annual Santa Clarita Elks Charity Roast on March 23.

The event will benefit the Samuel Dixon Family Health Centers, Inc.

The Dixon Centers provide health care services to uninsured and underinsured individuals in the Santa Clarita Valley.

The roast, described by organizers as a “light-hearted evening at the expense of retired city manager Ken Pulskamp,” will feature Santa Clarita Mayor Bob Kellar as the master of ceremonies.

The evening’s roasters will include Don Fleming, Ken Striplin, Steve Arklin and John Heys.

Tables are available for the event at a cost of $2,500, $2,000 or $1,500.

A live auction is also held to raise funds for the Dixon Centers.

Reverend Samuel Dixon founded the first Samuel Dixon Family Health Center more than 20 years ago in the community of Val Verde.

In addition to the Val Verde location, the Dixon Centers also have locations in Canyon Country and Newhall.

Two outreach locations are available at College of the Canyons and the California Institute of the Arts.

Sharon Laymon, executive director of the Dixon Centers said the centers provide immunizations and vaccines, physicals, screening and diagnostic tests, well baby care, preventative programs, family planning, women’s health services, prenatal services, treatment of illness and injury, and more.

“This past year, we provided over 11,000 patient contacts, with all charges based on the individual’s ability to pay,” Laymon said.

Ed Bolden, Samuel Dixon Family Health Centers board president, said the Dixon Centers are the only group of health centers founded and based in the Santa Clarita Valley.

“Our board of directors is made up of all SCV residents,” said Bolden. “We are proud that because of our community fundraising support, we are able to offer our services.”

Previous Elks roastees have included Cameron Smyth, John Heys, Jay Thomas, Bob Kellar, John Hoskinson, John Reardon, Bob Hudson, Frank Ferry, Don Fleming and the late Tom Veloz.

Pulskamp began working with Santa Clarita in 1988, a year after its incorporation. He was the city’s 17th employee.

He became city manager of Santa Clarita in 2002.

Pulskamp left the position in November and became interim city manager of Burbank in December.

He has a long history of supporting nonprofits in the SCV, including the Foundation for Children’s Dental Health, which he helped found.

Pulskamp served as the president of the City Managers’ department for the League of California Cities in 2010. He was awarded the “City Manager Award for the Advancement of Diverse Communities” from the League of California Cities in 2007. In 2010, Pulskamp won the inaugural Wes McClure award from the League, honoring a city manager for leadership, transparency and creativity.

He holds a Master of Public Administration degree from the University of San Francisco and has over 30 years of experience in local government administration

The Charity Roast will be held at the Santa Clarita Elks lodge, 17766 Sierra Highway, Canyon Country. Attire for this year’s event is suggested Western wear, business or cocktail. Tickets to the roast can be obtained by calling Donna Schmidt, 661-252-8424.
