The children of a former Valencia High School educator shot and killed in Woodland Hills on Valentine’s Day are struggling with “the worst thing” imaginable as they make funeral arrangements for their mother.

Caroline Sue Purviance, 61, who worked as a special education instructional assistant for three local high schools, was found dead inside a home on Mason Avenue in Woodland Hills on Feb. 14, Officer Sara Faden of the Los Angeles Police Department said Tuesday.

Her 24-year-old daughter, Laura, remains in custody in Oregon on suspicion of murdering her.

“It’s the worst thing you can think of,” said Katy Purviance, sister of the accused and daughter of the murder victim.

On Feb. 14 at 8:15 p.m., LAPD officers responded to a home in the 5600 block of Mason Avenue in Woodland Hills and found the victim dead of a gunshot wound. They identified the victim as Caroline Sue Purviance.

Early the next day Oregon state troopers arrested Laura Purviance at a rest area on Interstate 5 about 13 miles north of Medford.

Laura Purviance remained in custody in Medford, District Attorney spokeswoman Ann Canon said Wednesday.

Katy Purviance and her three other siblings — sisters Lila and Lisa and brother William — are making funeral arrangements for their mother while coping with emerging details about the homicide, she said.

Caroline Sue Purviance worked as a special education instructional assistant for close to five years at Valencia, Saugus and Canyon high schools. She worked for the William S. Hart Union High School District from March 1999 to January 2004, said district spokeswoman Gail Pinsker.

For more than 20 years, she worked, lived and a raised a family of five children in Saugus, including her youngest daughters, paternal twins — Laura and Lisa, each 24.

While raising her kids, Caroline Sue Purviance made time to become a registered nurse, said her daughter Katy.

“She worked at different nursing jobs,” she said.

In 2003, the Purviance kids saw their parents divorce. All members of the Purviance family moved away from the Santa Clarita Valley. Caroline Sue Purviance lived in Glendale at the time of her death, coroner’s officials said.

The home in Woodland Hills where Caroline Sue Purviance was killed belonged to Laura Purviance, daughter Katy said.
Funeral arrangements are likely to be made through the church Purviance attended most recently in Pasadena, All Saints Episcopal Church.
