Steve Lunetta: The case against Democrats

A friend of mine recently sent me one of those political emails that screams for fact-checking. You know the ones I mean — "Obama is really a space alien and we have proof!" or "Hilary Clinton Smokes Pot with Harry Reid."

Of course, there is often an ad for hair-growth cream at the bottom and a strong admonition of impending doom if you do not forward it to 50 of your closest friends.

The one I got talked about the city of Chicago and its gross mismanagement by the Democratic Party. Having lived in The City of the Big Shoulders for eight years, I have a little experience with the subject.

I’ve seen the dirty side of Chicago politics and it is true. Charlie Vignola recently made an incredibly naive statement that voter fraud was "a virtually non-existent crime." Charlie, Charlie, Charlie. There is a reason that we say in Chicago "vote early, vote often."

The email claimed that more people have died of gunshot wounds in the last six months than people killed in Iraq over the same period. So, I did a little homework.

According to the great bastion of conservative writing, the Huff Post, Chicago’s gun deaths were on a pace to surpass the deaths in Afghanistan in June of last year. If I’m not mistaken, that is a war zone.

The final year-end statistics were even more shocking. The website CrimeinChicago reports the number of gun homicides at 441 in 2011 and 535 in 2012. The year 2013 is no better with 50 gun homicides as of Feb. 12.

One website (InvestorsIraq) lists the number of shooting deaths in Iraq in the first quarter of 2012 at 214. Extrapolating that out, we estimate that 856 people were shot in Iraq.

So, it appears that our blogger email may not be so accurate. But, the Chicago number is still staggering. Add to that, Chicago has some of the strictest gun control ordinances in the nation and a true conundrum develops — if we control guns, why are so many more people dying?

Unfortunately, this illustrates just another failed policy and thinking of the Democratic Party. Controlling guns in Chicago has done nothing more than assuring that law-abiding citizens are deprived of the right to defend themselves.

My friend’s email went on to discuss the $78 billion state pension fund debt, much of it due to city of Chicago union retirees. Actually, this is very wrong. Illinois is about $122 billion in arrears. How are they going to pay that debt? At this point, no one knows.

Cook County (Chicago) sales tax is listed at 10.25 percent.

Well, the city’s actual rate is 9.5 percent. There were some decreases in 2012 that dropped Chicago out of the top 10 in taxation.

But, the point still remains — 9.5 percent is still outrageously high and hurts economic development in the city.

Can we all guess who runs Chicago politics? The Democratic party has long-since dominated the political scene from Richard Daly through the current mayor, Rahm Emanuel.

Maybe their Congressman are different? Bobby Rush, Luis V. Gutierrez, Mike Quigley, and Danny K Davis are all... Democrats. They are still trying to pick a replacement for Jesse Jackson Jr. but smart money says it will be another Democrat.

How about higher state offices? Governor Pat Quinn is a Democrat. Lt. Governor Sheila Simon is a Democrat. Attorney General Lisa Madigan is a Democrat. Secretary of State Jesse White is a Democrat.

In fact, there is not a Republican in meaningful public office within a 100 mile radius of either Chicago or Springfield (Illinois’ capital for all you liberals out there).

Is there any coincidence that the gross mismanagement of the city of Chicago and, for that matter, the state of Illinois, is directly attributable to the failed and still failing policies of the Democratic Party? The preponderance of evidence tends to say yes.

The sad thing is, the people of Chicago can’t seem to break out of their habit of voting for Democrats. Or, maybe, the system is so rigged through voter fraud that there cannot be a fair election in Chicago to bring in anyone else to clean up the mess.

Does this sound familiar? California — we are not far behind.

Steve Lunetta is a resident of Placerita Canyon and only votes once per election. What a sap. He can be reached at slunetta63@yahoo.com.
