Saugus had promising start, but season ends early

The Saugus Centurions girls soccer team knew it would have its hands full with the Marmonte League No. 1 Westlake Warriors on Thursday afternoon at Westlake High in the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Division II playoffs.

The Warriors drove that point home right off the bat, scoring in the third minute off a corner kick in an eventual 4-0 victory.

“Of course because they scored so early, they didn’t let down. But it was like they seemed shocked for it to have happened so early,” said Saugus head coach Natalie Helgeson of her team. “The girls fought really, really hard. We were just outmatched.”

Westlake (16-2-1 overall) added another goal in the first half to take a 2-0 halftime lead.

That ballooned to 4-0 with two second-half goals as Westlake continued to pepper Saugus goalkeeper Maddie Hebert with shots.

Hebert finished with 14 saves.

“When you have a team like Westlake, they didn’t hold back either. It’s not like they scored once and sat back and plugged in their defense,” Helgeson said. “We have a hard time even scoring goals, so you go down one you think you can tie it up. You go down two, it’s like ‘Oh man we have to score three goals.’”

Saugus (18-5-3) had an interesting year, in which the Centurions opened up the season 15-0-0 while winning both the Los Tacos and Buena tournaments.

But the league season saw things trend downward, as Saugus finished 3-4-3 in the Foothill League (fourth place).

“If you look at our record, it’s still a winning record,” Helgeson said. “The seniors can walk away saying we did that. We did something special. It wasn’t a CIF championship, but they did go 15-0.”

Saugus loses five senior starters, in Angie Weiner, Monica Allen, Emily Orr, Alex Pico and Brenna Savoie.
