Current coaches not necessarily losing their jobs

Although the jobs have been listed on the William S. Hart Union High School District website, it doesn’t mean that Golden Valley’s current boys basketball and boys soccer coaches won’t return next season to guide their respective teams.

Golden Valley co-Athletic Director Robert Fisher said that because basketball coach Al Vanhook and soccer coach Charles Martinez were interim hires, the school has to open up the jobs for other candidates to apply for the jobs.

Vanhook was originally brought on to coach the girls basketball team, but took over the boys program in August when former coach Myron Watkins stepped down.

Martinez, the former girls soccer coach, took over the boys program in November when Fausto Arana resigned.

The emergency hires have both expressed interest in returning as head coaches, Fisher said.

“We can’t give favoritism to anybody,” Fisher said of the existing coaches. “We want the best possible candidates for what’s best for our school.”

Golden Valley boys soccer went 6-10-5 overall and 2-5-3 in league, finishing in fifth place in the Foothill League.

The basketball team went 5-21 overall and 0-10 (sixth) in the Foothill League.

“We’re definitely proud of both programs and the steps they made in terms of competitiveness,” Fisher said. “The boys soccer team had wins and ties (in league) and boys basketball, despite having no wins in league, were (in games).”
