Canyon girls soccer maintained its share of first place in the Foothill League on Friday night with its 1-0 win over Hart High at Harry Welch Stadium.

The Cowboys (14-4-2, 6-1-1) scored in the 25th minute when Jessica Leuvano threw the ball into the box where Kati Dillion put it past an outstretched Kayce Perkins.

The shutout was Canyon’s and goalkeeper Alex Krall’s sixth in eight league matches.

The Cowboys have only given up two goals in Foothill League play.

“What’s happening is that our defense is picking up confidence because the balls are in the back of the net,” Canyon head coach Eric White said.

Playing on a rain-soaked field, the two teams appeared to be running on ice as no one was able to maintain their footing.

Passes either slid past their intended target or stopped prematurely as they rolled through standing water.

“My hats off to Canyon,” Hart head coach Mike Gomez said. “One of the first things we talked about at the beginning of the game was that whoever scores first, given the conditions, would win this thing.”

Canyon pressed the matter for most of the game, especially in the first 30 minutes of the first half.

But the Indians (12-8-2, 3-4-1) charged to close out the half.

However, just before half, Hart junior Brittani Reddick sustained a shin injury, according to Gomez.

She had to be carried off the field.

The second half was more of the same scrappy play, but Gomez felt his team picked up the intensity.

“Allison Carivau said, ‘It is a tie game. Lets get out there and put this to bed,’” Gomez said of the teams’ halftime meeting. “Everyone just kind of listened up and got fired up and went out there and fought.”

However, the Indians, like many other teams before them, could not break through the Canyon defense.

League play continues on Tuesday when Canyon host Saugus and Hart travels to West Ranch.

The Cowboys’ final two matches will be against Saugus and at Valencia, the winner could vary well take with them the league crown.
