The Valencia Water Company — recently purchased in a controversial move by Santa Clarita Valley’s water wholesaler through a stock buy-out — has a new director.

The Castaic Lake Water Agency’s board of directors this week picked Gary R. Martin, director of engineering for the Mojave Water Agency, to be the interim water retailer’s new director.

Board members interviewed a dozen people vying for the position Wednesday night and, in the end, picked Martin.

Martin has 24 years of civil and structural engineering, design, construction and management experience on a wide range of projects, according to information he submitted to the local agency.

He has been responsible for the design and construction of more than $150 million in water system capital improvement projects that involve pipelines and reservoirs.

Martin will represent Valencia Water on Castaic Lake’s elected board. In November 2014, he must be elected at large by agency voters.

Martin has a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from the University of Maryland, College Park, and a master’s degree in structural engineering from George Washington University in Washington, D.C.

The water agency had to fill the director’s position by March 8.
